FAQs About Our Therapy Services in Glen Allen, VA

Starting therapy is a big step, and it's natural to have questions. At Infinite Abilities Counseling, LLC, we want prospective clients to feel informed and empowered as they consider in-person or telehealth therapy services at our office in Glen Allen, Virginia. Whether you're wondering what to expect in your first session or how therapy can help with specific concerns like anxiety, trauma, or autism, our FAQ page is here to provide clear, compassionate answers.

Q: How Do I Know I Need Therapy?

A: There are a wide variety of reasons to begin therapy, from managing a diagnosed mental illness to help addressing daily stress or a transitional period of your life. While the decision to begin therapy is an individual choice, it is generally helpful for anyone. Your specific treatment plan, however, will vary based on your individual circumstances.

Q: What Can I Expect During My First Therapy Session?

A: Your first session is all about getting to know you. We'll talk about your goals, your concerns, and any relevant background information. It's a collaborative, judgment-free space where we begin building trust and identifying how we can best support you.

Q: Do You Accept Clients Who Are New to Therapy?

A: Absolutely. In fact, many of our clients are seeing a therapist for the first time. We'll walk you through each step and make sure you’re comfortable from day one.

Q: What Types of Clients Do You Work With?

A: We offer therapy for individuals and families, including children, teens, and adults. Our passion is supporting caregivers, those with disabilities of any kind, and adults with co-occurring mental health struggles.

Q: How Long Does Therapy Last?

A: Unfortunately, that can’t be answered on an FAQs page, as therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some clients come to us for short-term support, while others benefit from long-term care. We’ll be sure to tailor treatment frequency to your needs and goals.

Q: How Does Therapy Help?

A: Therapy comes with several valuable benefits. If you are seeking diagnosis or treatment for conditions like anxiety or depression, therapy can help you manage your symptoms, outbreaks, and triggers. It can also offer you increased coping skills and open your eyes to new ways of dealing with situations that you may not have been aware of before.

Q: What Skills Does Therapy Teach?

A: Therapy offers problem-solving skills, provides support, and helps you work through life changes, allowing you to see your circumstances as a personal growth opportunity instead of a burden or obstacle. Some specific skills therapy provides are:

  • Emotional management, including but not limited to: anger, jealousy, grief, and depression.
  • Coping mechanisms to allow you to work through situations that typically cause you anxiety, fear, or avoidance.
  • Stress-management techniques to apply to deal with stress within your everyday life, such as with your job and family.
  • Skills and techniques to help you better navigate relationships or work through relationship troubles.
  • Problem-solving skills for you to use when you encounter issues that previously caused you to shy away or back down, such as social situations or public speaking.
  • Improving self-love, self-confidence, and body image.
  • Improving communication, listening, and the ability to speak up for yourself.
  • Understanding your own skills, strengths, and positive attributes and learning to quiet your inner negative critique.
  • Finding a resolution to the issues that originally led you to therapy, such as having panic attacks, or being unable to sleep.

Q: Is Therapy Confidential?

A: Therapy sessions are confidential by law, and anything you discuss with your therapist will remain between the two of you unless you request otherwise. All therapists, including those at Infinite Abilities Counseling, are required to follow strict guidelines. No information can be disclosed without prior written consent, with a few notable exceptions.

Q: Does My Therapist Ever Talk About What We Discuss?

A: In general, no, but a therapist can disclose information from the session to legal authorities or appointed persons if any of the following are true:

  • The therapist suspects abuse or is made aware of domestic abuse. These situations require the therapist to notify law authorities immediately.
  • If the therapist suspects an individual has caused or is threatening to cause severe bodily harm to another person, therapists are required to report it.
  • If an individual intends to harm himself or herself, for example, and expresses plans for suicide to the therapist. While the therapist will attempt to work through this in the therapy session, if it appears to be unresolved or the client does not cooperate, additional action may need to be taken to ensure safety.

Additionally, if a judge has court-ordered your treatment records, they must be provided. The details of what you discussed remain private.

Q: What Types of Therapy Do You Offer?

A: We support a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, autism, PTSD, trauma, life transitions, and the emotional effects of chronic illness. Sessions are available both in-person at our office in Glen Allen and statewide via secure telehealth.

Q: What Therapeutic Modalities Do You Use?

A: Our therapists draw from a variety of evidence-based, trauma-informed, and person-centered approaches. These may include:

All of our modalities are practiced within a culturally responsive and inclusive framework to meet the unique needs of each client.
